This paper has presented transient GTD model for analyzing the 3D scattering of wideband beams by planar cracks that includes surface (Rayleigh) wave effects. The use of analytic signal representation incorporates explicitly the transient behavior of the field. For a given probe which can be either plane, spherical, bifocal, trifocal or with a Fermat's surface, the echo waveforms are calculated as a function of probe position. The 3D model predicts typical scanning of the probe. It allows for the prediction of the influence of crack orientation parameters (tilt, skew and third angle). It predicts the whole echo structure with quantitative information on both amplitude and pulse shape. The simulation deals with pulse-echo testing configurations but the theoretical model could be easily adapted to pitch-catch ones. Examples given in the present paper demonstrate the accuracy of the model and corroborate many previous deductions. The model gives good insight in expertise of crack like defects. It may further be used in model based inversion algorithms.
