摘要

It is shown that the PI method generates image-quality inspection data, unlike the conventional EC NDE. Crack images, for instance, can be obtained at a ~10 μm resolution. A Pi-based EC probe characterization instrument has been developed to enable visual examination of EC probes by generating induced field maps. It is pointed out also that the combination of the high spatial-resolution capability and the presence of the two separate penetration depths provides a useful means of performing other laboratory-based NDE measurements, particularly material property measurements and characterization. Turning the PI method into a fieldable method requires further developments. The present issues are the scanning speed and the raggedness of the optical system. The regulatory restrictions imposed on any laser-based instruments may set operational constraints. Here, it is suggested that a time-domain operation may resolve the issue of slow data acquisition rates.
