The cure of an epoxy resin can be tracked by WAXS which gives a measure of structure formation, by NMR which gives a measure of solid material growth, and by CW and SW ultrasound propagation velocities which give measures of modulus development. All four techniques indicate features that result from the cure process over equivalent time scales. CW attenuation shows a consistent peak early in cure and at the end of this peak the curing material begins to be able to support shear. It is therefore concluded that a combination of CW ultrasound absorption and velocity measurements can be used to indicate both the general progress of cure, but also the point at which cross-linking becomes significant and at which shear deformations become supportable.
