The use of photoluminescent doped zinc sulfide (ZnS) quantum dots (semi-conductor nanoparticles with a particle size less than the Bohr radius) in an ink-jet formulation, offers the exciting opportunity for the digital printing of characters and images which are invisible in ambient light but are visible in different colours when viewed under UV light. The colour depends on the nature and level of dopant metal ion contained in the host ZnS lattice. ZnS doped with Mn~(2+) ions exhibit a red-orange colour (600 nm) and when doped with Cu~(2+) ions they exhibit a blue-green colour (530 nm) under UV light. In ambient light they are invisible. Other colours are possible with different dopants and host lattices. The stabilised doped ZnS quantum dot colloids have been formulated for ink-jet printing and various images were printed on paper substrates using a 2811 Dimatix Materials printer. After printing, no image was visible under ambient light and the substrate appears blank. However, under UV light, photoluminescent images are visible with the colour being determined by the nature and level of the dopant ion. This new technology opens up significant potential applications for the ink-jet printing of security documents and labels in single colour and full colour characters and images, and also in novel flexible photoluminescent displays and advertising.
