A high-speed, laboratory film-press coater has been developed at Monash University, Australia, specifically to look at coating structure during coating and drying, and to relate observations back to rheological properties (and others) of the fluids if possible. One of the major benefits of this rig is that the operating speed is more closely matched to industry speeds - often not achievable on a laboratory scale. This paper describes the first experiments conducted on this rig using a model, pseudoplastic aqueous solution of 0.6% CRX (an acrylic copolymer). It demonstrates the variations in coating observed when various process parameters are changed, and shows the potential benefits of the on-line imaging facility for determining coating structural features. Image analysis revealed a linear relationship between increased coverage and dwell-time, as expected. Off-line rheological data were also obtained to further describe this model fluid, covering both shear and extensional properties. These properties were related back to the coating structure observed.
