Final effluent quality of biologically treated effluents originating from sequences beginning with hot acid/chlorine dioxide stages was similar to that of effluents from conventional chlorine dioxide bleaching of eucalypt kraft pulp. Pre-bleaching with the D_(HT)-stage produced effluent with a higher organic load (COD, TOC, BOD_5 and color) but lower AOX load than pre-bleaching with the D-stage, but while biological treatment removal efficiency of the organic loads were similar for the two effluents, AOX removal efficiency was lower in the D_(HT) effluent. Biologically treated effluents from sequences incorporating the D_(HT) technology presented lower color loads than those from conventional D-stage bleaching. Inclusion of a hot acid hydrolysis stage lowered effluent biodegradability, especially when combined with a hot chlorine dioxide stage (A/D_(HT)), without inter-stage washing.
