The Ensis-Papro Pilot Scale Former, formerly known as Clayton 1, was used to investigate the effect of variations in jet-to-wire velocities on paper formation and fibre orientation in tranquil flow for 80 g/m~2 sheets formed from de-inked, recycled hardwood pulp in the laboratory. Sheet properties were measured using an optical scanning formation procedure and a sonic fibre orientation analyser. Increasing the stock flow rate (0.095 m/s to 0.27 m/s) resulted in a decrease in formation index from 8.8% to 7.1% and an increase in MD/CD ratio from 1.18 to 1.32. The changes in sheet properties were attributed to increased shear rate in the stock flow.
