Air emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured during a pilot plant simulation of thermomechanical (TMP) pulping of radiata pine. The dominant VOCs identified in air discharges were terpenes, methanol and acetic acid. These materials constituted 58%, 30% and 5% respectively of the total measured VOCs (0.27 g/kg o.d. chips). Lesser amounts of formaldehyde, formic acid, ethanol, acetaldehyde, resin acids, fatty acids, toluene and styrene were also identified in the air discharges. The different VOCs were emitted at different stages during processing. For example, while the biggest discharges of methanol occurred during chip presteaming, the terpenes were lost mainly during preparation of the primary pulp and the acetic acid with the steam produced during refining. Results also showed that the VOCs detected in the air emissions were also present, often at significantly higher levels, in the aqueous effluents.
