Subaqueous water-rock reactions that occur at the pit wall/lake waterrninterface can affect the pH of pit lakes. Many pit lake water chemistryrnmodels neglect subaqueous reactions, which may create inaccuraternpredictions over time. A mineral quantification method is presented thatrndefines the wall rock mineralogy of active open pit mines, using samplesrncollected from the Martha Mine, a low-sulfidation epithermal Au-Agrndeposit in Waihi, New Zealand. The mineral quantification method hasrnfive components:rn1. Field observations and sampling,rn2. X-ray diffraction analyses,rn3. Selection of representative samples,rn4. Geochemical analyses, andrn5. Mineral accounting.rnPredicted mineral concentrations closely match observed mineralrnconcentrations visually estimated using petrographic techniques. Resultsrnof the method can be incorporated into a geochemical model ofrnlong-range pit lake water quality resulting from subaqueous water-rockrnreactions.
