We investigated the possibility of classifying winter road state from video images. The road state is classified as being in one the classes: dry, wet, icy, snowy, or snowy with tracks. Features (quantities that describe the image in some way, such as the average brightness) are extracted from the video images and given to a neural network, which then classifies the video images on the basis of their features.
