Difficulties of efficiently accessing both photologging data and relevant highway engineering data sets are well recognized in highway agencies. Recently, a full digital and computer based highway information system was developed. This Multimedia based highway Information System (MMHIS) uses technologies in digital video, multimedia data synchronization, three-dimensional visualization, high-speed networking, and video server. This paper focuses on the portion of geographical database development in MMHIS. Geographical database formats were initalized for MMHIS. Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are used to construct the 3-D terrain surface of the entire state. A unique picking algorithm was devised to conduct visual queries on the terrain surface of the state.
