This article is about protective structures against rocks falls. We present a new concept of rock-shed protection: it consists of a reinforced concrete slab (not protected by an embankment of ground) supported by specific supports designed to dissipate the energy of falling blocks arriving on the edge of the slab. Thus, by a single exchange of the damaged supports and/or a local repair of the slab in the impact zone, the structure can be reused and plays its role of protection. Unlike traditional rock-shed (covered by soil), this new kind of structure must be designed under dynamic load. Two damaging modes have to be considered: punching of the slab and bending. In this article, we present theoretical analysis and experimental results of the punching strength resulting from percussion. The experimental slab is a 1/3 scale model impacted in various points by a concrete block of 450 kg dropped from 30 m height.
