During the design and construction of the foundation pit blasting excavation of the Xiabaishi bridge, the method of longhole deck blasting was adopted for the first time, as well as the method of moderate longhole cutting blasting by stage and deck toe space charging with vertical large-diameter blastoles. Further, an attempt to use the method of joint-cutting cartridge blasting for the water coupled medium in large-diameter blastholes was made. Basic principles and the mechanics of methods are introduced and the course of pit blasting excavation is presented in detail in this paper. Practical results from the project showed that the average utilization ratio of blastholes was achieved (up to 96%), the peripheral hole mark ratio exceeded 98% and the time limit for the project was shortened. The construction technique is feasible with technical and economic benefit.
