In base-isolated bridges, it is well known that seismic forces can be reduced to reasonable amounts. On the contrary, response displacements of bridge girders become large in comparison with the conventional viaducts without base isolation systems. Therefore, the possibility of pounding between adjacent bridge girders should be considered in these cases. Shock absorbers between bridge girders are expected to mitigate pounding effects. Attention should be paid to the shock absorbers including bridge restrainer systems in the design of viaducts. In this study, a two-dimensional simple viaduct model in which various kinds of shock absorbers were attached between the end of bridge girders and abutments were used as an analysis model. Dynamic responses were calculated by carrying out a nonlinear time-history response analysis, and the effects of shock absorbers between bridge girders and abutments under earthquake were discussed in detail. It was found that, by using proper shock absorbers at the end of bridge girders, seismic forces are transferred to adjacent bridge piers by means of the continuation of bridge girders. The seismic forces were transferred almost equally to each bridge pier. Furthermore, an analysis model with a gap between the shock absorber and the abutment was examined, and the effects of the gap on the dynamic response of bridge girders and bridge piers were investigated. As a result, it was found that the gap between a shock absorber and an abutment has no effect on the transfer mechanism of seismic forces to adjacent bridge piers.
