ON FOAM IMPACT INDUCED DAMAGE WAVES IN REINFORCED CARBON-CARBON

This study discusses the existence of damage waves in RCC (Reinforced Carbon-Carbon) subjected to foam impact loads by re-examining and re-analysing the impact test results published by the CAIB (Columbia Accident Investigation Board) in their technical reports. There are two different failure patterns with widely different failure stresses. The first pattern is a half-through single crack associated with a lower stress at the crack-tip and the second pattern is the fragmentation of a through-hole with a stress level six times as large. The fragmentation pattern clearly indicates the existence of damage waves in the corresponding foam impact test. The solution of the new composite certification scheme, based on a hybrid numerical/experimental methodology and a damage wave code, is proposed. With the proposed technologies, one can map the test and modelling results in different experimental spaces, i.e. material testing space, small scale testing space and full scale testing space with the greatest compatibility so that three eminent features, i.e. robustness in ensuring safety, copiousness in cost-saving and adequacy in time reduction, can be achieved for various industrial applications, especially for computer aided engineering qualifications (CAEQ).
