In the Blast Effects Analyses (BEAs) for some airport terminal buildings, determining the vulnerability to blast loads of their metal deck roofs is important in assessing the risks from a terrorist attack. Predictions determining the blast resistance of this class of roof are difficult since its failure is predicated on the response of a fairly flimsy structure that is usually attached to the building framing with only tack welds or light fasteners. In this study, the blast resistance of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) metal deck roofs is investigated by examining the results obtained from a high-fidelity physics based (HFPB) finite element model. A range of blast loads and deck parameters were considered in evaluating roof deck performance. Key failure modes and criteria suitable for predicting deck failure were discussed and demonstrated with results generated by the HFPB models. Based on the analyses, pressure-impulse (P-I) curves are produced suitable for assessment or design of steel roof decks subjected to blast loads.
