摘要

It is well known that Asia and the Pacific suffer frequently from a variety of disasters, including floods, flash floods, drought, earthquakes, cyclones/typhoons, storm surges, tsunamis, landslides, avalanches, and epidemics. Though slower to occur, other disasters include land degradation, desertification, inundation due to sea level rise, contamination of water supplies (e.g. salt water encroachment in coastal areas), and loss of biodiversity (e.g. sources of tomorrow's miracle drugs).
