The effect of deformation constraint on the notch rootrnstrain under cyclic loading was examined. Biaxialrnstrains at the notch root of type 304 stainless steelrnspecimen subjected to cyclic loading was measured byrnusing a newly developed laser specklernstrain/displacement gauge. The total strain range at thernnotch root was observed to increase with increasing thernnumber of stress cycles at room temperature, while itrndecreased at 673K. The change in the cyclic strain rangernwas large when a blunt notched specimen subjected to arnhigh applied stress. A negative ratio of a lateral totalrnstrain range to a longitudinal total strain range, , wasrnalso examined. When a blunt notched specimen wasrnsubjected to a high applied stress, the value ofrnapproached 0.5, which meant that the stress state at thernnotch root was a plane stress condition. While, when arnsharp notched specimen was subjected to a low appliedrnstress, the value of approached 0, which meant that thernstress state was a plane strain condition. It was foundrnthat both the biaxial strain ratio and the change in therncyclic strain range were governed by deformationrnconstraint at the notch root.
