Potential users of Distribution Management Systems (DMS) face fundamental decisions and choices regarding the design and deployment of DMS technology. This paper aims to clarify some critical issues that utilities, and in particular electrical distribution companies, struggle to resolve while attempting to integrate DMS, GIS and SCADA technologies. Architectural solutions are discussed that serve to 'future proof an organisation's DMS investment against rapidly changing industry and technological forces. Current and future business applications of DMS technologies are examined to identify how future opportunities may be exploited or unknowingly limited depending upon your architectural decisions.
