Life Extension Strategy for Heavy-Duty Gas Turbines after Long Operating Periods

Gas turbine and GUD(~R) power plants are typically designed for a useful service life of over 30 years. Essential components of SIEMENS gas turbines ― these include turbine blades and the hot-gas-path-casings ― are designed for a service life of 100,000 equivalent operating hours. If operated at base load, the hot-gas-path parts of this type of gas turbine, for example in a GUD(~R) combined-cycle power plant, would reach the end of their useful service life after only 10 to 12 years. This is well before the end overall plant service life defined in the power plant concept. Such plant applications therefore necessitate life extension measures enabling to continuing operation beyond 100,000 equivalent operating hours. In more concrete terms, this concept encompasses maintaining the original output and efficiency levels. It does, however, offer the option of implementing measures to increase power output and efficiency. This contribution gives a detailed presentation of the strategy of service life extension measures based not only on the design criteria but also operating experience gathered with SIEMENS V94.2 gas turbines. Focal points include the strategy for hot-gas-path components in the form of detailed materials investigations into the residual service life of components such as turbine blades which have been subjected to long-term operation. Evaluation criteria for the remaining gas turbine components such as the compressor blading, rotor and pressure-tight casings are also presented. The concept for service life extension measures after 100,000 equivalent operating hours was developed for implementation during a scheduled major inspection and overhaul. It is possible to calculate the impact of life extension measures on power generation costs over the plant's entire service life on this basis.
