In an effort to minimize fuel costs and to meet increasingly stringent regulatory requirements for air emissions, operators of coal-fired power plants are compelled to evaluate burning types of coal that may be different from those identified during the boiler design. The tendency of the ash in coals to foul the boiler heat transfer surfaces is a primary consideration in boiler design. When a coat is burned having different ash characteristics than what the boiler was designed for, significant operating difficulties can arise. In the following, key characteristics of coal ash that affect boiler design, and difficulties that can arise from the different ash characteristics are discussed. Finally, strategies for minimizing the impact of the more difficult coal types will be discussed.
