Sulphur in coal is the precursor of SO_2 pollutant The sulphur in coal forms in organic and inorganic part Most of the SO_2 comes from organic part of coal after combustion in a furnace. The conversion of sulphur into SO_2 depends on many factors, i.e. furnace temperatur, mixing mode of combustion. Indonesian coal which is mostly low in sulphur content was investigated in order to fulfil regulation in the year 2000 which cuts emission limit from current 1500 mg/Nm~3 (at 3 % O_2) into half. Case study is the investigation of SO_2 control in Indonesian power plant Steps include measurement of SO_2 emission in power plant, and laboratory scale, and measurement of sulphur content in fly ash and bottom ash. Comparing the emission with regulation limit, the emission of sulphur still needs action to fulfill the limit Since the world has become uncovered in that the pollution from a place will go without permission crossing the border of the state, then the needs for regulation limit of pollutant with regard to the global climate change should be achieved in cooperation among the states. The paper will demonstrate the type of Indonesian coal with various sulphur content and its conversion to SO_2 based on coal combustion testing in a state of the art 5 MMBtu boiler simulator and 400 MW coal fired power plant.
