A not-so-quiet revolution is underway in the substation arena, with remarkable implications for the way business is conducted throughout the utility enterprise. As it progresses, it's shaping utility ambitions in this new era of competition and profoundly changing the nature of delivered products. It's tempting to simply chalk this up to better communications technology, but there's more going on here. In his well-known PBS series Connections, James Burke holds that major changes occur when a critical mix of circumstances and technologies combine to provide a compelling new approach to a problem. I'll begin with the big picture, follow it with a review of key UCA communication components, and finish with the high points of a communications demonstration project we are conducting with the Tennessee Valley Authority.
