In most of the commonly used design procedures thernbehaviour of asphalt mixtures is considered to be linear. Eitherrnlinear elastic or linear viscoelastic behaviour is assumed. It isrnhowever a well known fact that most of the road engineeringrnmaterials have a stress dependent behaviour, their behaviour isrnespecially influenced by the magnitude of the confiningrnstresses. This fact has not received the amount of attention as itrnshould have received and the research findings in this fieldrnhave hardly penetrated the common pavement engineeringrnfield. This is surprising because not taking into account thernstress dependent nature of asphalt mixtures at elevatedrntemperatures might result in significant errors in the predictionrnof stresses and strains in the bituminous layers and so inrnpavement predictions. This is especially the case if predictionsrnon surface cracking and , permanent deformation have to bernmade and to some extent it might also affect the quality of ourrnattempts to model ravelling of surface mixtures.rnThe research that is described in this paper deals with therndetermination and the modelling of the stress dependentrnbehaviour of asphalt mixtures. To this end five different typesrnof asphalt mixtures were subjected to a triaxial testing programrnin which the specimen were tested at various stress conditions,rntemperatures and loading frequencies.rnThe results of the testing program were used to model thernresilient modulus of the mixtures as a function of the appliedrnstresses. It appeared that a simple model could be developedrnthat showed the dependency of the resilient modulus on thernconfining stress.
