The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations was established in 1951 and it is built upon a foundation established by the American College of Surgeons in 1917. Over the years the Joint Commission has engaged healthcare providers, government, and the public in developing accreditation standards and refining a survey process to assess the performance of healthcare organizations. The Joint Commission accredits approximately 18,000 healthcare organizations. The objectives of this paper are to: 1. Provide an overview of the Joint Commission's Accreditation Process; 2. Discuss strategies used by the accreditation process to improve organizational performance and decrease risks for patients; 3. Discuss similarities and differences with review processes used by other organizations.
