The aim of this paper is to contribute to the developments of environmental indicators, which are an indispensable tool for ecosystem health assessment and ecosystem-based management. Most decision makers request scientific advice to be given in the form of indicators.rnAt present, indicators are under development for a number of European seas and coastal lagoons. The most advanced is the development of S (State) and P (Pressure) indicators (usually developed by "environmental experts"). Developing D (Driving force) and R (Response of society) indicators (usually undertaken by "socio-economic" experts) is less advanced. These developments should lead to the joint/combined approach to elaborate full D-P-S-I-R framework of indicators. This paper describes basic ideas behind indicators and offers a set of illustrative examples of P-S-R indicators for the main environmental concerns in the Baltic Sea: eutrophication, overfishing, chemical contamination, oil pollution, invasion of non-indigenous species, sanitary conditions of coastal waters, dumping of dredge spoils, extraction of sand and gravel, offshore oil and gas production, contamination by artificial radionu-clides, physical impact of large-scale constructions, and loss of biodiversity. Some illustrative examples of possible D-Driving force indicators are also presented. A number of indicators have been taken from existing developments, but some of them are proposed according to the author's judgment. These indicators can well be used or adopted for marine and coastal management purposes.
