By all accounts, the structured approach to software development is no longer the dominant paradigm. Objectrnorientation (OO) is at the forefront of technology today, and a deep understanding of this phenomenon isrnrequired to effectively manage the transition to this approach. While there are many who assert that OO is arnfundamentally different approach to software development and, therefore, constitutes a paradigm shift, therernare others who assert that OO has evolved from prior ideas in software engineering. This research uses arnphilosophy of science framework to explore paradigmatic changes that may have occurred in the field ofrnsoftware development. Specifically, it applies the Kuhnian notion of paradigm shift to understand the evolutionrnof software development processes. It also proposes Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA) as a viable methodrnfor empirically validating concepts such as paradigms and consensus in a field.
