Geotechnical engineers commonly use rules of thumb and empirical judgements in designing many structure types, particularly earthen embankments. Selected lessons learned from the Author's 34 years of practice in the design of small earthen embankments constructed by the NRCS (formerly the SCS) are presented in this paper. Embankment settlement, camber in existing dams, and implications related to overtopping and erosion are covered. Other topics include tradeoffs related to shear strength and flexibility and quality control recommendations for compaction of earth fill. Methods for estimating permeability of foundation soils, sampling of dispersive clays, discussion of critical hydraulic gradients and piping, and design of filter diaphragms are also included.
