Breaching of man-made and natural water containment structures has caused significant environmental/structural damage, human injury, and financial loss. Old mine workings are oftentimes nearby tailing ponds, new mine developments, and can underlie construction sites. Although maps of abandoned mines exist, map accuracy and barrier pillar integrity are of concern. Visual inspection of impoundment dams and levees has also proven to be an inadequate means of assessing the potential for breach. This paper describes the science and engineering principles underlying the Radiowave Imaging Method (RIM) that has been developed and deployed since the mid-1980s in the mining industry. Adaptations of the RIM instrumentation can be applied in monitoring dams and levees. The paper also describes field data acquired with man-carried RIM instrumentation featuring the use of an electromagnetic (EM) wave gradiometer antenna array. The DeltaEM gradiometer determined, in real time, water seepage path center line and depth through argillaceous materials. These materials are used in dam and levee construction.
