Concrete Dams comprise of a high percentage of the large dams in the United States, and many of these structures are now several decades old. With age many of these facilities have experienced deterioration due to environmental effects combined with deferred maintenance and repair. In addition, current design loads (i.e. floods, seismic) for many dams are significantly greater than the loads used in the original design. Therefore, dam owners have frequently been faced with costly rehabilitation to satisfy current safety guidelines. Economics typically limit the available funds for dam repair and rehabilitation. In an effort to reduce the cost of unnecessary repairs to concrete darns, engineers have used sophisticated analysis methods to more accurately simulate the structural behavior of the dams. The more sophisticated studies allow the engineers to take into account all available structural strength and reduce the level of. assumptions used in the analysis, which can result in more cost-effective solutions.
