Split-leaf gates were developed to mimic the operation of stoplogs. Low and normal flows are discharged over the crest of the upper gate panel to maintain a relatively constant reservoir level. Lowering the upper gate panel provides added discharge capacity, similar to removing stoplogs. Raising both panels provides greater discharge capacity for larger flood events. The electric operators provide for easier and safer operation than removing stoplogs. Table 2 presents a comparison of several alternatives for replacing stoplogs. The split-leaf gates have been installed at several sams to replace stoplogs or other types of gates. Split-leaf gates are ideal for replacina stoplogs or gates on small dams where there is no need to replace or modify the structure. They often may be placed in existing stoplog slots or downstream of the slots. Split-leaf gates are well suited for replacing underflow-type gates when crest control is desired to minimize operation requirements. They have proved to be economical solutions due to their simplicity in fabrication and installation.
