Extensive trenching investigations of fully developed and partially developed slough slides on compacted clay slopes have demonstrated a clear and consistent set of physical features for these slides. The highly fractured and fissured structure of these clay soils that is present before the triggering of the slough slides is what is to be expected from the weathering process of fat clays (CH) under seasonal wetting and drying cycles. The process of formation of this structure is described in detail in the soil science literature. Understanding the process by which these slough slides form in embankment slopes permits the rational engineering of slough slide repairs. The engineering process consists of determining the soil type, identifying the slide plane and designing a remedial measure that will significantly retard or eliminate the formation of the highly fractured and fissured structure. With this knowledge and experience, Geotechnical Engineers can provide invaluable service to owners of embankments that are susceptible to slough slides.
