摘要

The Embry-Riddle Robotics Association (ERRA) has completed its second design cycle in therndevelopment of a rugged, autonomous unmanned ground vehicle. TALON II is a newly designed vehiclerncarrying the name of its predecessor, TALON I. The redesign and manufacture included a new chassis, arnnew and improved drive train and enhanced system capabilities.rnTele-operated / Autonomous Land Oriented Navigator (TALON II), is built with three major designrnemphases: ruggedness, ease-of-use and reliability. By stressing on these three design aspects, the teamrnwill achieve the goal of producing a vehicle that will be an efficient, rugged and modular solution to therndesign challenges presented by the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC).rnTALON II is built on a chassis of 1” square tubular steel and uses a 2 hp differential steering system tornpropel itself through its surroundings. The steel chassis and direct drive system enhance reliability andrndurability of the vehicle while maintaining the ruggedness of design inherited from TALON I. In an effort tornimprove the ruggedness over the previous design, TALON I was outfitted with a suspension system torndistribute the load of the vehicle to all four support points. The performance of the previous vehiclernencouraged the design team to forgo the use of complex sensors and emulate human navigation byrnrelying solely on video input for navigation. Electrical and power systems on boardrnTALON II were redesigned to maximize battery life and increase vehicle endurance and reliability. Effortsrnwere taken to fortify electrical subsystems against both impact and weather and to reduce systemrncomplexity and increase reliability.rnTalon II’s design yields a rugged, versatile, modular and simplistic vehicle capable of competing in allrnaspects of the IGVC as well as carrying out it’s secondary mission as a development and experimentationrnplatform for sensors and control systems.
