For the development of high-end headphones, numerical simulation of the acoustic behaviour is an efficient tool. While lumped-element models are valid for frequencies up to a few kilohertz, finite-element models are valid for higher frequencies too. A headphones model using finite elements and boundary elements was built in three phases. In parallel to building the numerical model a real-world sample was built and measured. The validity of the model was verified by comparison of both the radiated sound field and the membrane modal behaviour. Good agreement between measured and computed amplitude frequency responses was achieved.
