The utilisation of Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS) for rotorcraft applications has surged over the past decade in order to meet the stringent requirements for rotorcraft airworthiness. The need for improved safety, reduction of operational and service costs vis-avis aging fleet of rotorcraft are some of the influential factors which have led to the rapid maturity of HUMS systems. Although the implementation of HUMS systems for rotorcraft based platforms have resulted in airworthiness oriented benefits, research demonstrates that there is a significant scope for improving the overall effectiveness of HUMS systems. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey of HUMS systems which are particularly suited for rotorcraft applications. The capabilities of HUMS systems are identified from a holistic multidisciplinary design perspective to determine the issues and challenges. The identification of issues to date will provide the inductive groundwork for future studies pertaining to the development of HUMS systems which are more effective and possibly optimal for a specific rotorcraft application.
