By using a model-based design approach to control systems software design, COTSrnsoftware–based products helps develop a model that is used to simulate a plant andrncontroller, develop a prototype of the controller, develop a hardware-in-the-loop systemrnand deploy software in the system itself. In fact the computer model takes the designrnfrom concept to code and from code to flight-test. The model can also be reused on otherrnsystems to save time, reduce overall costs and maintain intellectual property.rnThis paper examines the model-based design paradigm used on a variety of unmannedrnprograms from Boeing and BAE Systems. From these "case studies", lessons learnedrnare discussed. The lessons learned include: advantages of graphical control systemrnspecifications, simulating system performance prior to system integration, ability to reusernexisting designs, and the reuse of flight control software extracted from the systemsrngraphical design.
