Environmental investigations identified a limited area of groundwater contaminated with hexavalent chromium at a 100-year old former manufacturing facility. Total chromium concentrations in groundwater ranged up to 18.6 milligrams per liter (mg/L), and the concentrations of hexavalent chromium ranged up to 11 mg/L.The former property owner, Navistar, Inc., is seeking a No Further Remediation Letter from the State of Illinois. A Remedial Action Plan, approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, consisted of the creation of an anaerobic in-situ reactive zone to reduce the hexavalent chromium to immobilized trivalent chromium with a single injection event using a dilute molasses/ferrous sulfate solution.The program included baseline sampling, a direct-push and injection well pilot test, full-scale injection, and post-injection monitoring. The direct-push pilot test consisted of the injection of 2 gallons per minute for each 0.1 feet of rod withdrawn from the ground (200 gallons total). The data indicated that direct-push injection resulted in short-circuiting of the injection fluid at a monitoring well five feet away. Short-circuiting would have prevented adequate distribution of the injection fluid in the full-scale system and would have failed to adequately treat the contaminated groundwater. The 2-inch inside diameter permanent well (5-foot screen) test injection rate was approximately 2.4 gallons per minute (720 gallons total). There were no indications of short-circuiting during the injection well pilot test, and accordingly the permanent well delivery method was selected for full-scale application.Post-injection groundwater sampling results indicated adequate distribution of injection solution, and that conversion to trivalent chromium was achieved in less than two weeks from the injection event. The groundwater remediation objective was successfully achieved within 14 weeks of the single injection event. The chromium concentrations remained below the 1 mg/L remediation objective after six months.
