Blue Spring Run, an approximately one-third mile long stream from Blue Spring to the St. Johns River, is the primary winter thermal refuge for the St. Johns River population of endangered West Indian manatee. The run is located in Blue Spring State Park, in an area of central Florida that is experiencing rapid growth. Groundwater withdrawals to meet growing water demands are projected to affect spring discharge. The interaction of discharge, river temperature, and river and run stage, combined with the complex morphology of the run, determine the size and effectiveness of the run as a thermal refuge. Detailed modeling and analysis of this interaction has been conducted by the St. Johns River Water Management District to establish a hydrologic regime for Blue Spring that will protect the thermal refuge. The established hydrologic regime will determine the amount of groundwater that can be withdrawn regionally to meet water supply needs.
