Management of multi-land use watersheds typically involves the co-evolution of socio-economic-ecological systems that operate at multiple spatial-temporal scales. The most challenging task for sustainable basin management is to learn how to manage the co-evolution of these complex riparian sub-systems in real space and time by targeting their basic structures and fundamental interrelationships at each level of analysis. This, in turn, calls for a new ecosystem view of watersheds as complex dynamic systems that transcends narrow disciplinary and management boundaries. Although geographic information systems (GIS) have great potential in promoting sustainable basin management, this potential can be compromised by many factors. For GIS to live up to its potential, there is a strong need to better understand these factors and their interplay, and to think about formulating an informational strategy to promote sustainable basin management.
