EFFECTS OF RIPARIAN CORRIDORS AND HYDROLOGY ON AGRICULTURAL STREAM BIOTA

The U.S. Geological Survey examined 25 agricultural streams in eastern Wisconsin to determine potential relations among stream biological quality, watershed and riparian land cover, and hydrologic characteristics. Fish, benthic invertebrate, and algal community data were collected in 1993 and 1995, along with aquatic habitat, land cover, geologic setting, geomorphic, and hydrologic data. Preliminary results from correlation analysis suggest that the response of aquatic communities and habitat to watershed agricultural land use is affected by riparian corridor, geologic, geomorphic, and hydrologic conditions, but the relations are aquatic community dependent. Fish communities were influenced by riparian and to a lesser degree watershed land cover/use and geologic setting. Invertebrate communities were influenced by baseflow and local habitat, and to a lesser extent riparian corridor width. Algal communities were related to watershed agricultural land use, riparian corridor width, and possibly hydrologic conditions. Habitat quality correlated with hydrologic and geomorphic features. Some metrics within the same community correlated with different environmental variables than others, indicating that care should be used when using only one or two metrics to assess water quality and the importance of one environmental factor over another.
