Several studies in the geomorphic literature report that stream reaches in pasture are generally narrower than in forest. Pasture grasses armor stream banks against fluvial scour, and entrap alluvium, so promoting channel narrowing. Under riparian forest, channels are appreciably wider (typically by a factor of two in small streams < 5 m wide). In New Zealand, conversion of formerly pasture land to pine plantations has led to stream bank recession following canopy closure. Eroded bank material has caused sedimentation of the streambed, and the washing of fines has reduced water clarity. Planting of riparian zones is often promoted in order to buffer streams from degradation by pastoral agriculture. However, such planting seems likely to cause channel widening with sedimentation and water quality problems during the channel adjustment phase. These transitional side effects of riparian planting may persist for a few years to decades as the stream channel changes to a forest morphology. Eventually the stream channel can be expected to stabilize with a clean sediment bed and clear water. Channel widening should be explicitly recognized before riparian restoration, so that management efforts are not discredited when stream habitat and water quality decline for a time rather than improve monotonically.
