摘要

The vital role of geomorphology in the ecological functioning of streams and watersheds is now widely appreciated. However, the lessons of geomorphology continue to be ignored by many practitioners of stream and watershed rehabilitation, particularly in the urban context. Designers often fail to appreciate the types of geomorphic processes associated with different landscape conditions, the rates of geomorphic processes associated with these conditions, or even long-understood rules of thumb concerning the stability of geomorphic surfaces. This has resulted in the proliferation of projects that fail to meet their intended objectives, whether this be slope stabilization or habitat enhancement, and may actually exacerbate future erosional impacts to rivers and streams. Such projects not only represent a waste of scarce funding resources, but they delay the enhancement benefits required by stream organisms at risk. We discuss some basic geomorphic principles pertinent to successful stream and watershed rehabilitation design and implementation and highlight the consequences of ignoring geomorphic controls. Failure to openly discuss unsuccessful projects or techniques and learn from these mistakes only inhibits advancement of the craft and science of watershed and stream corridor rehabilitation.
