Recent research suggests that riparian zones (variable source areas: VSAs) play a key role in regulating the export of nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) solutes from headwater forested catchments. We tested a unified hypothesis that investigates the feedback between hydrologic activity in riparian and hillslopes reservoirs and the export of nitrate and dissolved organic N (DON) from catchments. Topographic, hydrologic, and chemical data collected for the Archer Creek catchment (133 ha) were used. Nitrate and DON concentrations are being determined on an event and weekly basis. Using a 3-m resolution digital terrain model (DTM), the spatial extent of the VSAs and upslope contributing areas were related to the distribution function of the topographic index [In(a/tanβ), where a is the upslope contributing area per unit contour length, and β is the local slope]. TOPMODEL simulations provided information on the dynamic expansion and contraction of VSAs, and allowed partitioning of streamflow into saturation excess and subsurface flow components.
