We propose a combined battery system (CBS) for low cost electric vehicles (EVs) to enhance its battery life. The EVs popularly called as Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle or Low-Speed-Electric-Vehicle are spreading in developing countries. The EVs approximately have top speed of about 100 km/h and cruise range of about 100 km. Commonly the EVs batteries consist of high energy density cells, and we call it as capacity type battery (CTB). A major issue with the EVs is high operational costs mainly due to high battery cost and short battery lifespan of the CTBs. CTB lifespan can be enhanced by reducing the load on the CTB and protecting it from large charge-discharge currents. In this study, we develop a CBS consisting of a CTB and a having high power density battery which also called as power type battery (PTB). Furthermore, we developed a prototype EV in order to evaluate its effect. As a result, we find out that the CTB life can be doubled by combining it with a PTB having a capacity under 1/20 of the CTB.
