The behaviour of alumina and 93%alumina-7%magnesia.inclusions at the solidification front of steel was observed in the in-situ experiment The conclusions are as follows. (1) Alumina inclusions in low oxygen steel are easy to coagulate each other but the movement at the interface was weak. (2) The velocity of the advancing interface changes in due course of "engulfment". (3) 93%alumina-7%magnesia.inclusions does not coagulate as alumina inclusions. (4) They escape very rapidly from the advancing interface but gather again to the retreating interface. (5) The rapid movement of particles is due to Marangoni flow by the change in both the thermal and the concentration profiles in front of the moving interface.
