During the last ten years the advantages of CLSM-CDF as a structural backfill forrnflexible pipe were mentioned occasionally in technical publications. However, the use ofrnCLSM-CDF is still not widespread in underground pipeline technology due to a lack ofrnreliable technical data available to support the cited advantages of CLSM-CDF.rnA team at Ohio University recently completed a comprehensive research projectrnon the application of CLSM-CDF as a pipe backfill. The project consisted of threernphases: Phase 1 concentrating on laboratory characterization of CLSM-CDF, Phase 2rninvolving two field demonstration tests at the load frame site, and Phase 3 focusing onrnanalytical predictions of HDPE pipe performance installed in CLSM-CDF. Thisrntechnical paper summarizes the key findings made in Phases 2 and 3 of the OhiornUniversity project. Overall, the project results showed that CLSM-CDF could be a highqualityrnbackfill material for flexible pipe.
