Cadmium (Cd) is one of the highly toxic elements in the soil environment. Soil surface charge characteristics may affect the adsorption of Cd and the equilibrium of Cd forms. The effects of organic acids on the surface charge characteristics and secondary adsorption of Cd by a yellow cinnamon soil and a latosol were studied. The results indicated that the quantity of negative charge of latosol was increased by the absorption of organic acids, whereas that of positive charge showed an opposite trend. The quantity of negative charge of yellow cinnamon soil was decreased by the absorption of organic acids, whereas that of positive charge changed little. The adsorption of citrate and oxalate increased the secondary adsorption capacity of Cd in both soils, and significantly increased the affinity of Cd to soils. The effect of oxalate on the adsorption of Cd was stronger than that of citrate on yellow cinnamon soil, however the situation was on the contrary for latosol.
