Four rock specimens in plane strain compression are modelled numerically by use of FLAC. One is homogeneous specimen; the others include pre-existing material imperfections whose positions are randomly selected. The intact rock firstly obeys linear strain-softening behaviour followed by ideal plastic behaviour once the stress acting on the element reaches the shear strength controlled by cohesion and the internal friction angle.The intact rock obeys a Mohr-Coulomb criterion with tension cut-off. Initial imperfections undergo ideal plastic behaviour at the onset of failure and possess non-zero tensile strength equal to the tensile strength of the intact rock. Five custom written FISH functions are used to prescribe the initially random material imperfections and to calculate the acoustic emission counts, the accumulated acoustic emission counts, the elastic strain energy decrease rate and the total elastic strain energy decrease. The numerical results show that specimens with imperfections can model the actual failure processes (including the imperfection extension and coalescence and the combination of shorter fractures to form longer through-going fractures) of rocks, while the homogeneous specimen cannot. The influence of imperfection density is also explored.
