Aimed at the rock in bottomhole under mud column pressure, this paper puts forward to a cutting force model of straight-edge cutter in orthogonal cutting mode, and a model of the cutter in oblique cutting mode by transforming the oblique cutting into an equivalent orthogonal cutting referring to the theory of metal cutting mechanics. To predict cutting force of a PDC cutter with rotmd profile, the micro-edge integration method is used by which the round edge of the cutter could be divided into a series of micro-edges, and the cutting force of each micro-edge could be calculated by utilizing derived straight-edge cutting force models. The model and the corresponding method introduced in this paper have been successfully applied to analyzing and evaluating the performance of PDC bits by means of predicting bit drilling force.
