The physical process and fracture criteria of rock breaking under pressure head are still of interest to many researchers around the world. Basing on the microstructure of brittle rock, the strength criterion of relative deformation was put forward to estimate the initiation and propagation of rock cracks.According to the experimental results of spherical indenter invading into the brittle rock, four basic stages of rock breaking were divided with reason. The two mechanical models of FEA were described. The initiation mechanism of Hertz scracks, middle cracks, and lateral cracks was explained with reason by means of the strength criteria of relative deformation and the results of finite element analysis, including the first principal strain field, the third principal strain field, and the shear strain field. And the formation of fracture angle was also explained. The strength criterion of relative deformation can also be applied to glass, ceramics,concrete etc.
